Bibai HALF-MARATHON : 2015

2015 HM #7
2015 Race #9
Wednesday, September 23rd, 2015

Price : 3000 yen
Course : Flat
Course time : 2 hours 30 minutes

Drove up the night before and crashed at the Road Station in Naie. On to Bibai the next morning under clear blue skies. Nice. Legs were feeling a little stiff, but not too bad. Have to be careful on this run. Just gotta finish. I had to wanted to enter the Asahikawa HM on Sunday the 27th, but missed the entry date by one day. (The entry date was two months in advance!) However I really wanted to try and run four half-marathons in one month and, if I took this one slow, I felt I had done enough training this year to handle it.

Signed in, got my race t-shirt (been a while since I got one of them) and started getting ready. Lots of stretching! MHM was doing the 10K as well. Nice little setup here with a big patch of grass, some stalls, beer on tap and yakitori. Fortunately we got a good park for the car too.

Getting near race time and I tried to stand at the back of the HM runners, but in front of the 10K, 5K runners etc. (There was no one holding signs to separate everybody out. Not such a bad idea that…) Of course, when the gun sounds for the HM I started to bump into people who were standing in completely the wrong place. Can handle it if they are kids, but a lot of the time it was the parents standing with their kids, waiting for the last race to start in the middle of the people about to start the first race… Come on!

Anyway, the race was flat, warm, sunny and fairly uneventful. Just cruised it. Really conscious of not running too fast. Got out into the country quick, which didn’t take long, of course. They had a wheelchair race as well. Some were flying, some weren’t. That’s gotta be hard work on your arms.

Hit the 5K water station and it was about this point when I started talking to elementary school teacher guy from Sapporo. One of the good things about running here is the random conversations you have with people. Of course, I’m only really up for two or three minutes…at most. It is a race, after all. For 21K!

I just couldn’t shake this guy though. I would try to speed up (which I really didn’t want to do…) and he would match me. I would ease off the pace and he would do the same. Just hitting me with “by the way…” Over and over again. So many questions. He wasn’t running that fast, but just keeping in time with him was stressing me out. I just wanted to run my own pace. Eventually, I just stopped dead and pretended to stretch. Naturally, he thought I was injured and stopped to see if I was okay. I politely told him I was fine and for him just to continue. This worked…for a while…

Despite trying to run slow, I eventually caught up with him. He noticed me and hit me with “by the way…” for like the 47th time. I told him very politely that I just wanted to run at my own pace and that I couldn’t talk anymore. I probably apologized five times in the process. He apologized six and then we were good.

So the race continued. My old workmate was in this race again. He turns up everywhere. He’s fast though. Like 1:20 fast. Anyway, hit the 10K, the turnaround and the water station just after that. From here on I definitely took more walk breaks. Basically, if I had any kind of weird feeling in my legs, I would stop and walk it out for ten seconds or so. Just gotta finish…

Hit the 15K water station feeling good enough. They actually had another water station at 16K (due to the other races) so I made use of both. Pretty warm out. Kept moving on fairly steadily, walking from time to time if anything felt weird, but with 2K to go I came across my friend from before. I had conserved a lot of energy by this point, but I didn’t want to ease past him as he might start talking to me again! So I blew past him listening to him singing my praises about how tough and powerful etc I was. Kinda funny as we were all running at the wrong end of the race. Just trying to escape too much conversation…

So I picked up the pace for the last 2K. I was sure I could hear him on my heels the whole way – always just my belt bag banging against me… Ha ha. Anyway, ended up finishing strongly…and in one piece. Nice.

Pork soup after the race, but a local yakitori restaurant that MKev mentioned called Tatsumi had a stand as well. There was a big line, but MHM waited in it for me. Sweeeet! Grilled chicken and beer in plastic cups. Always good. Maybe they were just running out of chicken, but we got random pieces of meat. Totally expecting just thigh meat, but there was all sorts. Including the stuff I never order. Wasn’t so pumped on that.

As I was lying on the grass stretching out my back with my eyes closed, someone tapped me on the shoulder. (Pretty much the worst way to approach someone, if you ask me!) I looked up and this guy is right in my face/personal space. Didn’t say a word, just pointed to my name and place of residence in the programme, then flicked through to his name and place of residence…and it turned out we both live in the same town – five hours away. At this point he actually started to talk to me, somewhat bizarrely though. Always nice to talk to people. Just wish they would approach me in a slightly more normal fashion. Or not talk for too long!

Speaking of which, my other buddy came back to talk as well. Fortunately he kept it short!

No free ticket to the hot springs, but you did get a hundred yen discount off it. From 650 to 550 yen. I don’t normally like to pay more than 500 yen, but had to go try it. Along with everyone else in the race and a local soccer school though! Very. Crowded. But…yeah, a nice hot spring! MKev had pumped it up, too…along with the soft cream. MHM ordered an orange soft cream, which turned out to be crazy sour. Like did we get grapefruit by accident?

Ha ha. Too many complaints. Actually quite a good day…and four half-marathons in September. DONE.

Nakashibetsu HALF-MARATHON : 2015

Sunday, July 12th, 2015

Course : Hilly
Course time : 3 hours

Pulled into town around midnight the night before and managed to find a nice rest area to park at – it wasn’t that obvious at first though. Woke up the next morning and drove to the city office to park our car. Unfortunately we couldn’t park at the sports grounds so we had to take the free shuttle bus to get there.

It was already pretty “warm” when we got there and not a lot of shade or cool places to sit. The whiteboard said it was 31 and I didn’t doubt it. However not being used to running in hot weather, I didn’t drink nearly as much in advance as I should have…

The course also had a three hour limit. Most races have a two and a half hour limit. I didn’t investigate why…

Two big mistakes!

Anyway, the race started at 9:45am and it was HOT. And then…from about 2.5K we started to climb…and climb…and climb. I hadn’t run enough hills and I didn’t drink enough in preparation so I got tired quick. As did a LOT of other people. It was brutal!

The first water station was at 5K and I drank several cups of water there and continued. I usually drink half a cup at best. I was lagging badly, but I was still three minutes ahead at the first cutoff point at 6K. At about this stage the first person was lying passed out in the ditch. Fortunately there was staff on hand to look after her. Lots of people were to be picked up by the ambulance service during the race…

So anyway, we kept climbing in the heat. And climbing. I was taking walk breaks very early on, but we just kept going up. Just couldn’t get on top of it! We hit a sponge station at 8K. Didn’t help much, but I was hanging in there.

Eventually got to the next water station at 10.5K. Very much appreciated, but it wasn’t getting any cooler. Another water station was directly opposite it so I figured we would run to the turnaround point at the halfway mark then get another shot at the water station very shortly. They even had watermelon!

It was a major downer to find out the turnaround point was actually at 13K, although there was a sponge station at 12K. I must have looked exhausted as a guy gave me a whole jug of water to drink. I pretty much drank all of it too.

Anyway, the next cutoff time was at the turnaround at 13K. I was five minutes ahead. Man, never have I been so close to being cut off in a race! My fault totally though. Just bad preparation. The guy there was calling out times to let the other runners know they had to speed up etc. At least it gave people a chance.

Looking at the map of the course now, I see that it climbs from 2.5K all the way to 12K. Really got to check the race details in advance!!!

The heat was intense, but I struggled on. No energy at all… Felt I was going to make it though. Just getting to the turnaround point at 13K seemed like a marathon in itself!

Got back to the water station, which was actually at 15K, but there was no more watermelon. GONE. Spent a bunch of time drinking water, ate something (can’t remember what it was now though) and had multiple buckets of water tipped over my head. Felt I had my times worked out and there had to be a good downhill section coming up. Saving up for a strong finish.

From the water station at 15K to the sponge station at 17K there was a slight climb so I took it easy getting up there. I had plenty of time and there was that big downhill section coming up, right?

WRONG. I got up to the 17K sponge station after taking my sweet time at the 15K water station and was the FIRST person cut there. There were people running a little in front of me who were allowed to continue. I was gutted.

Admittedly, I should never have gotten myself into this position. I should have investigated the course, run more hills in training, checked the weather forecast and drank more water in advance…

But I really wish someone at the 15K water station had told me to hurry up. Or I wish they had the 17K cutoff time posted at the 13K cutoff. The cutoff times were written in the program admittedly…but who really takes note of the cutoff times?!

What is most frustrating is that I had almost 40 minutes to cover the final 4K (with a big downhill section). I could have walked that! Yet I wasn’t allowed to continue… Cut at 17K…

Takasu HALF-MARATHON : 2015

2015 HM #2
2015 Race #4
Sunday, June 28th, 2015

Price : 2500 yen
Course : Basically flat
Course time : 2 hours 30 minutes

Rolled into the rest area at around 2am. No parks, but after a couple of laps miraculously someone left. Four hours sleep…

Up and out to Takasu for registration at 8am. Really close to Asahikawa, but it was the first time to ever hit this town. Anyway, race started at 10:20. 10K started at 10:25, meaning the 10K runners all thundered past us. Still trying to work out the logic there. Wouldn’t it be better for the 10K to start before the HM…?

Anyway, being a “jogging festival”, there were all sorts of races… meaning there were a billion water stations. At the start anyway. It was actually fairly cool out and perfect for running, but I actually considered wearing a long t-shirt and/or tights. Glad I didn’t though. The water was good. Took a drink at every station. Ran with the sponge in my hand too. They even used ice! A little unusual really…

It was an out and back course in the countryside. As with all my races recently, didn’t look at the watch much and just cruised. Makes it so much more… well, fun!

The first hill came just after 7K. Long-ish, but not that steep. Turned the corner after that and then a shorter drop back down. Hit the turn around and the hills on the way back were fine. Just cruised, but started to feel it on the flat at 18K. Got slower and slower, but eventually made it across the line.

Must have had really bad timing as the lines to get food were out of control just as I had finished. Ended up going to the convenience store… Oh well, liked this race though. Back next year!

Santa Teresa County Park King Richard Annual 5K Trail Run : 2015

2015 Trail Run #1
2015 Race #1
Saturday, April 4th, 2015

Up at 6am as we had to be out the door at 7:15am to make the drive from Santa Cruz to the race in the hills around San Jose on time, which was very much a small local event. (King Richard turned out to be the organizer’s father.) Basically the 5K course was straight up a steep hill…then straight back down on a hard trail in clear weather. Cold first thing in the morning, but it started to heat up during the race so I quickly worked out I had overdressed. Coming out of the Hokkaido winter, I hadn’t done that much running, let alone trail running, so it was hard work on the climb. Fun though, and nice to run somewhere different. Great views, too.

2015 BC Day 15 = No Name Peak

2015 BC Day 15
2015 BC Snowboard Day 5
Tuesday, March 24th, 2015

Started hiking at 5:30am with IF after sleeping in the car the night before. With snow on the forecast the last two nights, had to get out and see if I could get me some. Everything was totally covered up and it looked good, but there was a slight crust with only occasional patches of perfection. Was hoping for more of that skier’s left. Hiked 45 minutes above the treeline to the bottom of the top bowl. Thought about going to the top, but it just looked cold and windy up there. It was only 6:15am at this point, after all. Anyway, the riding. Didn’t really deliver so just went with the one line today. Oh well…

2015 BC Day 14 = No Name Peak

Started hiking at 7:30am back on Thursday March the 19th after sleeping in the car the night before. Was totally expecting the powder from Sunday to have burnt off and I wasn’t wrong. A sneaky dump of snow would have been nice though. So yeah, it was fairly firm. The weather was pretty nice though. Almost sunny, high cloud and little wind. Hiked to the top with IF in one hour ten. Probably back on the snowboard for the rest of the season. Nice morning to be in the mountains!
